10 Things To Do in Moab, Utah, and How To Do It

I already wrote a blog about my favorite activity we did in Moab: Off-roading in an ATV. Check out that story here. But there are more ideas of what to do while in Moab. The best time of year is March-May and September-November. The summer is also possible, but I would avoid the more strenuous hikes during that timeframe.

  • Arches National Park: Explore stunning natural stone arches, including the famous Delicate Arch. Hiking trails offer various difficulty levels and breathtaking views. Beware that the Delicate Arch trail is 3.2 miles roundtrip, but more importantly it has a 629 ft. elevation gain. We did it in late June when it was already quite hot, and there is no shade anywhere. I couldn’t make it all the way, and I sent my husband onward to capture this picture of the famous arch. So take plenty of water, and know your limits. Make sure to get a timed entry permit in advance at the National Park Service website.
  • Canyonlands National Park: Visit the Island in the Sky district for panoramic vistas and hiking trails. Don’t miss the Mesa Arch at sunrise for a spectacular view. We did a 4X4 tour that went on BLM land, took us up challenging Schafer Trail, and ended up in Canyonlands. On this tour we also saw the spot where they filmed the final scene of the Thelma & Louise movie!
  • Mountain Biking: Moab is know for its world-class mountain biking trails, such as the Slickrock Bike Trail and the Porcupine Rim Trail.
  • Off-Roading: Rent an ATV or join a guided tour to explore the rugged terrain. Popular spots include Hell’s Revenge and Fins and Things. We did this tour driving our own ATV on Hell’s Revenge. We loved that we could drive the 4X4 ourselves, yet we followed a guide who knew exactly where to go. It gave us confidence to try this exhilarating, kinda scary experience.
  • River Rafting: Experience the Colorado River with guided rafting trips ranging from enjoying a cool, calm float to braving thrilling white-water rapids.
  • Dead Horse Point State Park: Enjoy breathtaking views of the Colorado River and the surrounding canyons from the overlook, and hike the scenic trails. We enjoyed seeing the bright blue potash fields from Dead Horse Point.
  • Guided Rock Climbing: Take a climbing lesson or join a guided climb to tackle the unique rock formations in the area.
  • Scenic Drives: Drive the La Sal Mountain Loop Road for stunning views of the mountains and valleys, especially during the fall.
  • Stargazing: Moab is a designated International Dark Sky Park, making it perfect for stargazing and night sky photography. Head to a remote spot for unobstructed views of the night sky. The parks are open 24/7, so you can easily find a spot to take photos.
  • Local Art Galleries: Explore the local arts scene with galleries showcasing works inspired by the stunning landscape of the region.
