Mljet National Park in Croatia – Is This Hidden Gem Worth a Visit?

The short answer is YES, and here are some of the reasons why. But first a little about what it is and how to get there.

About the Mljet National Park – This 13k acre (5300ha) park is on the northwest portion of Mljet Island, and is 35 miles (56km) from Dubrovnik. It contains two saltwater lakes, Veliko and Malo Jezero. They are salty because they are connected to each other and to the Adriatic Sea via canals (see photos above with bridges). When the sun is out the water in the 2 lakes is so vibrant blue-green! We went on a cloudy day, but the sun perked through a few times. Even in mid-September it wasn’t too cold to take a swim. The water was slightly warmer than the air!

Getting There – It’s easy to get to from Dubrovnik – you can take a ferry from Split, Dubrovnik, Makarska, or Prapratno. There are also plenty of boat excursions available to take you there. Or better yet, take a 3-day boat charter that’ll take you to multiple islands.

What To Do

  • For us the highlight was jumping into the larger lake (Veliko) and floating through to the smaller lake (Malo Jezero). See the 4th photo above. The location is at the Malo Jezero Beach. They do have a (rustic) restroom where you can change clothes.
  • Rent eBikes to ride the 5.8 mile loop trail around the larger lake Veliko. Or if you’re up to it cycle further on the island. The main road is about 20 miles long with some hills.
  • Take a ferry to St. Mary’s Isle in lake Veliko. There is what used to be a monastery which is now a restaurant and cafe.
  • Rent a kayak at Malo Jezero Beach.
  • Enjoy a meal in the quaint little town of Polače.
  • Take a Tuk Tuk tour from the main peer in Pomona. This option provides an easy way to see the National Park, and also provides you with a guide that will tell you stories about the park and it’s history.

Cost – The park entrance fee is about USD 25 depending on the season. If you are staying multiple days, you can ask the ticket person to write in your dates to allow multiple entries throughout your stay without buying more tickets.
