Flåm Fjord Cabin in Norway – Our Favorite Rental Stay

Here’s how to get to the most beautiful place we’ve ever stayed at. And I’m not getting paid to say this.

📍Fretheim Fjordhytter in Flåm, Norway

Take the 6-hr scenic train, Flåmsbana, from Oslo to Flåm. You’ll see some of the best views, waterfalls and maybe catch a glimpse of the wood nymph.

Stay at one of the 4 Freitheim Fjordhytter (Fjord Cabins), which overlook the fjord, have several bedrooms and all the conveniences, and even come with a little motor boat that you can take out on the water! It’s quite pricey at $400-500/night, but worth every penny because you’ll remember this place for the rest of your life. Find them on Airbnb or TripAdvisor.

The owners are the sweetest couple. The husband’s family has been in Flåm for generations, and the wife was visiting from Australia decades ago, when they fell in love. She thereafter moved to Flåm, and they made a life there. Now their grown children help them with the cabins and a farm that supplies produce to the local restaurants.

To leave you can either return the same way OR catch a combination of boat, bus and train to get to Bergen. We did Oslo to Flåm by train, then a boat ride through the UNESCO -listed fjords to Gudvangen, a coach bus to Voss, then a train to Bergen. This could feasibly be done in one long day, but we recommend making an overnight or 2-night stop in Flåm. The tours start at about $150 and are SO worth it.
